Yusra Mardini's parents Mervat and Ezzat Mardini are from a Muslim Community and once led a comfortable life.
Her mother's name is Mervat and she was a physiotherapist. Her father, Mohamed Ezzat Mardini, was a swimming coach who took Mardini and her sisters to the pool on Saturdays.
She has a little sister too named Shahed. Her mother and her younger sister Shahed are living with her in a new flat in Berlin.
Everything was going normally in their life until the Syrian Civil War started which drastically changed their life. According to Mardini's statement in Vogue magazine, At first, she hardly noticed what was going on and tried to live like a normal kid going to school and swimming.
After things got worst, Yusra's mother send her and her sister to Turkey where they reached Turkey via Lebanon and were smuggled into Greece. They traveled by boat with other 18 refugees. The boat's engine started to fail as the carrying capacity of the boat was only 6 to 7 people.
At that moment, the two sisters pushed the boat for almost 3 hours. Then they reached Germany and settled in Berlin.
